Spinelli’s interest in fungi dates to the purchase of his Woodstock property in 1978, when he began wondering about all the “crazy-looking mushrooms” sprouting up around his house. He carries a large basket on his mushroom walks — large enough to carry a 25-pound chicken of the woods that he harvested recently. Live insects and slugs crawl across the specimens in several photographs, which Spinelli called a happy accident.
“I pick the mushrooms, put them in the basket, bring the basket into the studio, and it has life inside,” he said.
