Aric Attas

Aric Attas is an internationally recognized interdisciplinary artist with a BS in Psychology from Hobart College and an MFA in Photography from the Hartford Art School. Attas is critically acclaimed for his work with abstract photography, immersive video installations, generative music, and ambient sound environments. Inspired by modern science, ancient spirituality, and meditation, his experimental work explores the mysteries of the universe. “If you’ve ever looked up at the stars and felt a sense of wonder, awe, or transcendence, you understand what drives me to create,” he says. He is currently working on a series of data-driven sound installations incorporating generative ambient music, data input from the natural world, and collected field recordings. These works are infinite in nature, evolving through adaptive generative algorithms that respond to data input from elements such as lunar phase, tide levels, biodata from plants, live green plant cover, soil quality, evapotranspiration, etc. Some elements influence the work in real-time, others incorporate historical or predictive data. Each composition tells a story about a slice of our cosmos through data and sound. His intention is to use technology as an invitation for people to reconnect with the beauty of the natural world with a sense of curiosity. As artist-in-residence at the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute in FL, USA , he is collaborating with the scientists at Queen Conch Lab to create sound works reflecting the life cylce of the the queen conch. These pieces will incorporate data sonification, field recordings, and generative music. His generative music has been featured in multiple film projects in the US, UK, and the Czech Republic. Interested in conversations between art, science and spirituality, he continues to exhibit his work in science centers, art galleries, and spiritual centers.
