This past October, over 30 participants gathered online to participate in the official launch of AwE’s new Art-Science Library. The library offers publications by artists, scientists, curators, and analysts exploring the questions, methodologies, and theoretical implications of scholarship and practice of art and science. The library is composed of over 600 references which were donated by over 50 artist practitioners, scholars, and art-science organizations from across the globe. Conceived as a ‘living library’ this dynamic project is constantly expanding to incorporate up to date information and work done in the art-sciences.
The launch event, held on October 21st, featured two presentations by contributors to the library. Kicking off the event, Dr. Clarissa Lee introduced her new book “ArtScience: A Curious Education,” and her own vision for the field of art-science. AwE was honored to be joined by the late Professor Trevor Pinch then spoke about his own career in shaping the field of Science and Technology (STS), and about the relevance and relationship of Art-Science to STS. Pinch was a pioneer in STS, leading the field of sound studies, through which he published frequently on sound objects, the moog synthesizer and the sociology of technology.
Board member Dr. Adam Law gave an organization history of AwE, describing AwE’s future plans and the rationale for the library. The library was introduced by board member and library manager Dr. Hannah Rogers, who described the curatorial process and rationale for the selection process in the library. Tamar Law, the library curator, ended the event by giving an overview of how to use the library, including its two broad collections, and outlining the future vision of the library. If you were not able to attend but would like to contribute to the growing library or have any questions pertaining to the library, please contact Tamar .
